5. ROUND AND ROUND

Michael cycles next to me along the empty streets. The blue hills stretch out in front of us. He does not get puffed nor does he sweat.

“Why did you stay behind?” I say.

“I always take my time with things,” Michael says.

“Where is everyone meeting?” I ask.

“I don’t know. In the hills?” he says.

“Where is your family?” I ask.

“I don’t know,” he says, “Where’s yours?”

“I had an... accident. Since then my memory has been affected,” I say.

“What do you remember?” Michael asks.

“Not much. The accident happened while I was surfing. A large wave threw me upon the rocks. I saw my name on my licence. That’s about all I know,” I say.

“Have you been to your house?” Michael asks.

“No, I haven’t,” I say not knowing where my house is.

“Let’s stop awhile,” Michael says, slowing then stopping his bicycle. His hair is still immaculate and he does not have one bead of sweat upon his face.

“Show me your licence,” Michael says.

I take my bag off my back and go into my purse and find the licence.

“Here,” I say handing Michael the licence.

“This address is just around the corner,” Michael says.

“OK, let’s go there,” I say, not sure of what I might find but desperate for more information about me.

When we get to my house I notice the large trees out the front. There is car parked in the garage – an old one. The garden is neat and cared for.

Michael and I go to the front door.

“It’s locked,” I say after trying the handle.

“Your key should be in your bag Elizabeth,” Michael says.

“Of course,” I say diving back into my bag and finding the key.

“Elizabeth, there’s something I need to attend to. I’ll meet you back here in fifteen minutes if that’s OK,” Michael says.

“Sure, no problem,” I say.

As I enter the house I see a polished wooden floor and a Persian rug and there are photographs on the mantelpiece which I go straight to.

I see there is one with me and two older people who must be my parents as they look just like me. There is a young man with them as well who also looks like me who must be my brother and there is another young man with his arm around me who must be my boyfriend. He is handsome with short brown hair and dark skin. Another photograph is the man and I down at the beach as the sunsets. We look impossibly happy. The photograph makes me lonely for this man but I cannot remember his name. I cannot remember anything about him.

“Hello?” I say not expecting a reply.

I wander around the house.

I find a room which is obviously my room as there are more photographs of the handsome man and I. There is one where we are arm in arm on a beach. I turn the photograph over and there I a note tucked into the frame.

It reads, “Elizabeth you are so beautiful to me like a rare shell upon the beach and when I listen to it I hear the whispers of love.
